Weekend Recap: Trinity Sports Find Success Against Wesleyan, Bates, Hamilton Across Numerous Contests

This weekend saw all of the spring Bantams engage in fierce competition against teams across the NESCAC. If you missed the action, the Tripod has you covered. 

Trinity rowing started the weekend off bright and early on Saturday, April 6. The women’s first boat beat the Coast Guard Academy by 30 seconds in their first race but barely lost to College of the Holy Cross by just five seconds in their second race. The second, third and fourth boat fared similarly, handing the Coast Guard Academy another three losses by a combined near 100 seconds with each losing just barely to Tufts after the break. 

The men’s boats continued the trend, with their second and third boats outpacing their first opponents of the day (Coast Guard Academy for each boat) yet falling to their second opponents (Tufts for the first and third boats and Williams for the second). Trinity’s fourth boat fell just shy of Tufts and Williams in both of their races of the day. However, the men’s first boat was able to beat the Coast Guard Academy in their first race as well as Tufts in their second race; the only Trinity boat to beat Tufts.

Trinity softball played four hard-fought games this weekend. On Saturday, the Bantams scored three runs in the seventh inning to secure a 5-2 win against the Wesleyan University Cardinals in Middletown. Shortstop Taylor Mikolajczak ’25, who earned her 100th career hit of the season on Wednesday, led with three hits, and all three earned runs came from different Bantams. In their second game of the doubleheader, Trinity came up just short in a 9-8 loss in their second game. Mikolajczak once again pushed three hits past the Cardinals’ defense, matched by first baseman Kennedy Rogers ’24 who also had four RBIs. The Cardinals just barely squeaked by with a walk-off single in the seventh, splitting the doubleheader.

On Sunday, April 7, softball once again lined up a doubleheader; this time, defending the coop against Amherst College. Trinity once again took the first game 4-3 with Tiffany Stowers ’24 pitching her second complete game and second win of the weekend, garnering four strikeouts in her battle against the Mammoths and improving to 8-0 on the season. Mikolajczak scored two runs, also earning two hits and one RBI. Rogers added two hits and RBIs of her own, cementing the Bantams’ win with a walkoff single in the final inning. In their second game of the day, the Mammoths got their revenge, beating the Bantams 8-6. Rogers still came up big, scoring three hits with one RBI. After their long weekend, softball holds a 13-8 record. 

The Bantams’ baseball team saw similarly wavering results during their weekend in Waterville, Maine. Trinity scored big against the Colby College Mules in their first game on Saturday, winning 14-11. The Trinity offensive effort was split among several of their players, with left fielder Dylan Schnitzer ’26, right fielder Andrew Thomas Park ’26 and second baseman Aidan Stern ’27 all contributing three hits. Two of Park’s hits dropped over the fence, with first baseman Sean Meth ’24 and catcher Jack Ryan ’24 adding home runs of their own. The Bantams had less success on Sunday, falling to the Mules twice. Colby took the first game of the day 6-4 despite an honorable offensive effort from the Bantams with Park, designated hitter William Frain ’24 and center fielder William Sawyer ’26 earning two hits each. Ian Brown ’24 held his own on the mound, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts. Trinity fell far short in their final game in the weekend with Colby outsourcing them 12-2. Going into next week’s contest, Trinity baseball has an 8-11 record.

Both Trinity tennis teams split their matches this weekend, beating Bates College on Saturday and falling to Tufts on Sunday. Versus Bates, the men outmatched the Wildcats 7-2, with Pierce Rutledge ’25 earning a single win 6-3 as well as a doubles win 8-5 with his partner, Luca Garbati ’27. The Bantams beat the Wildcats in each singles match and earned one doubles win. Against Tufts, the men lost 9-0. Despite the loss, Trinity continues to hold a 9-3 record on the season.

Women’s tennis handed Bates a 6-3 loss on Saturday, winning two doubles matches and four singles matches. Angelina Shyltsyna ’24 and Elise Brennan ’26 both secured wins in their doubles and singles matches. The women fell 7-2 against the Jumbos on Sunday with Brennan and Shylstyna beating their opponents in their doubles match and Ella Baker ’25 winning her singles match in three sets. After their weekend, women’s tennis holds a 4-6 record.

On Saturday, Trinity women’s lacrosse made the trip to Hamilton College, barely losing in a 9-8 thriller. Attacker Molly McGuckin ’26 scored half of Trinity’s goals, finding the back of the net unassisted three out of four times. Attacker Natalie Miller ’24 contributed two more goals with attacker Brooke Kurtz ’25 rounding out the score with two more goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Alie Macdougall ’26 defended Trinity’s net with vigor, boasting nine saves in the game. Hamilton’s Julia Lee scored their go-ahead goal in the final 20 seconds to secure the close win over the Bantams. Going into next week, Trinity women’s lacrosse aims to defend their 5-5 record from falling below .500. 

Men’s lacrosse handed the Continentals a 11-7 loss on Saturday at home. Attacker Jon Krikorian ’25 led the flock, scoring three goals and assisting in two others. The Bantams dominated the Continentals, shooting 52 times to Hamilton’s 27. Trinity goalkeeper Jordan Opdahl ’25 had 14 saves, allowing the Trinity offense to continue to barrage Hamilton. Midfielder Jay Ottomanelli ’26 added two goals to the bunch with four other Bantams contributing to the large score. The Bantams improve to 6-4 on the season.
