Women's basketball finishes strong against Middlebury

The Trinity College Women’s Basketball team thrashed the Middlebury Panthers, 77-48 in their NESCAC season finale on Feb. 13. Middlebury fell to 11-12 overall and 3-7 in NESCAC play. With this final game in the regular season, Trinity claimed its first NESCAC win, moving to 1-9 in conference and 11-11 overall. After a decently close first quarter, the Bantams expanded their lead in the middle of the game by dropping 46 points (compared to the Panther’s 25) during the second and third quarters. Middlebury only went 8-15 from the free throw line, but the Bantams made 17 straight free throws (19-21).
In the first quarter, the Bantams sunk eight straight points. Middlebury retaliated and curtailed the Bantams lead with back-to-back lay-ups by Colleen Caveney and Sarah Kaufman, but Trinity’s Emily Llerena ’18 sunk a shot to give the Bants a 14-7 lead at the end of the first.
Middlebury closed the gap at 16-12, but Trinity was able to stop the progress of the Panther offense and countered with a 13-2 run. The Bantams kept up a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the second quarter, taking a 37-24 lead into halftime.
After the half, the Bantams started strong with a 10-2 run over the first few minutes of the third quarter. Trinity continued its success into the fourth as well with a 28-point lead and finished the game strong.
In total, Mackenzie Griffin ’16 led the Bantams in points and rebounds with 20 points and 10 boards. Llerena added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Bantams off the bench. This was a strong conclusion to a weak season for the Bantams, and a good note to end on for the seniors’ final NESCAC game.
The women will play their final game at Anna Maria College on Feb. 16.
