How does a person become a meme? Maggie Millian knows the answer. Millian ‘18, a film student at Trinity, recently rose to fame on Trinity’s many social media platforms. Her popularity continued to grow until she was asked to introduce the band Twin Peaks at the Mill’s Saturday night Spring Weekend concert.
When asked how her name became the stuff of Trinity legend, Millian smiled mischievously. “Back before he was announced as the Spring Weekend headliner, I started a rumor that Action Bronson would be chosen. I told everyone I knew,” she said. When Bronson really was announced, and subsequently removed, Millian and her friends hatched a plan. With the absence of a headlining act, Millian started a new rumor: that she alone would be performing in Bronson’s place.
“The fans just took to Yik Yak, and hyped me up.” Trinity students on the anonymous social media platform Yik Yak made Millian into a viral folk hero in the days preceding Spring Weekend. As the actual event drew nearer, Millian and her friends knew that such an enormous amount of hype should not be wasted. Millian and her friends decided to make their own Snapchat filter. The Geofilter was available only for one hour on Saturday, Apr. 29, but fans rushed to visit Millian on the Quad and take a picture with their hero.
Millian was present at the Kehlani Concert on LSC quad as a spectator, but it wasn’t until the concert at the Mill later that night that she finally had her moment in the spotlight. Millian is a close associate of the Mill but says that she was surprised and honored when she was asked to introduce Twin Peaks.
“I’d do anything for my fans,” says Millian, laughing. “And it was such an amazing concert.” Millian took to the stage at the Mill and quickly had fans chanting her name. Millian even mingled with the performers for long after the show had ended. “My life has changed a lot in this past day,” says Millian, sighing comically. “But I’m just trying to stay humble.”
