Men’s Hockey Halted by UMass Boston in NCAAs

Despite their effort, the Trinity College Men’s Ice Hockey team fell to the University of Massachusetts-Boston on Mar. 12. With a 4-0 loss, the Bantams were removed from the NCAA Division III Tournament in the first round.
In the first period, Beacon forward Mike Thomason scored first when he took control of a bad Trinity pass. While the Beacons would not score again for the rest of the period, they would lead in shots at 11-9.
Bantam forward Mark Knowlton ’19 almost tied the game with a backhand high shot, but Beacon goalie Billy Faust was able to make the save. Faust would go on to make 37 saves in the game, making him an integral part of the Beacon’s victory against the tough Bantam offense. Bantam goalie Alex Morin ’18, who made 24 saves in the game, made back to back saves soon after Knowlton’s attempt. However, the Beacon offense would eventually break Morin through the efforts of senior forward Derek Colucci, bringing the score to 2-0. The Beacons kept their second period streak alive when forward Zach Lindsay slammed the puck between Morin’s feet through traffic in front of the net. With a 3-0 score, Beacon forward Frank DeAugustine sent his shot sailing just high above the goal. Bantam Captain Elie Vered ’16 almost scored off of an assist from forward Ethan Holdaway ’17, but he was blocked by Faust. Trinity forwards Brandon Cole ’17 and Ryan Cole ’17 were also denied by Faust.
Trinity gained a power play late in the third period, but Faust blocked shots by Sean Orlando ’17, Tyler Whitney ’18 and Griffyn Martin ’18. In a last ditch effort, Morin was pulled out of goal and the Bantams rained over 17 shots onto Faust before the end of the game. Unfortunately, the Bantams could not score and the Beacons were given another point when Colucci was tripped on his way to the Bantams’ open net.
Trinity closed its season with a 21-6-1 record. The Bantams won the NESCAC title for a third time and reached 20 wins for the third year in a row this season.
