In the world of college sports, teamwork, camaraderie and resilience are qualities that are often praised. The Trinity College Rugby Club (TCRC) has embodied these principles throughout the season, led by their inspiring junior captain Kevin Romero ’25. With six victories under their belt this season, the TCRC had been a force to be reckoned with until their recent match against Wesleyan University, where they faced a tough loss; this match, however, does not take away the fact that the TCRC had been undefeated for two years prior. The club is working hard to make sure they keep this reputation for the next match.

Romero is a living testament to the transformative power of rugby. He spoke about how the sport had changed his life in ways he never thought possible. “Rugby has changed my life in ways I never thought it would,” he emphasized, his eyes reflecting the passion and dedication that rugby has brought into his life. Romero’s journey is an inspiring one, and it serves as a testament to how sports shape character and build self-confidence.

Romero faced initial doubts about his ability to succeed in the physically demanding sport of rugby; he soon discovered, however, that his size was no match for his determination. “Since I am not the tallest on the team, rugby has given me the confidence I needed,” he says with a grin. “When I get to tackle guys bigger than me, and even bigger than everyone on the team, I get so hyped and feel like I’m on top.” Romero’s self-determination radiates on and off the field, inspiring his teammates to push their limits and embrace the challenges of the game.

While winning is undoubtedly a crucial aspect of sports, Romero is quick to point out that the team’s unity and enjoyment are equally significant. “This team is a big family,” Romero says, highlighting the strong bonds forged among the players. “Other than winning, we have fun together,” he added. His sentiments echo the spirit of sportsmanship, proving that victory is not solely about the number of points on the scoreboard but also about the shared moments and unforgettable experiences.

The TCRC’s success this season, with six victories before the Wesleyan match, showcases their commitment to excellence- both individually and as a team. The path to victory in rugby is paved with hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Under Romero’s leadership, the Trinity College Rugby Club is determined to maintain their winning streak through the season, and they show their mettle time and again.

However, the recent loss to Wesleyan University on Saturday, Oct. 28 served as a valuable learning experience: it reminded the team that even the most impressive winning streaks can be broken, but it is how they bounce back that truly matters. Romero and his team displayed resilience and sportsmanship in the face of defeat, promising to regroup, learn from their mistakes, and come back even stronger in their next match.

Romero concludes that “joining the TCRC has been the best choice I made when I got to college, and I would recommend others to make the same choice too.” His words carry the weight of experience and a genuine passion for rugby, serving as an invitation to all who seek personal growth, camaraderie, and the thrill of sports.

Romero embodies a spirit of resilience, unity, and determination. His journey from self-doubt to unwavering confidence is an inspiration, and his dedication to his team and the sport exemplifies the values that make college sports truly exceptional. With a family-like bond and commitment to winning, the TCRC has a promising future. Romero will undoubtedly continue to lead them to new heights both on and off the field.
