Winter sports are back in full swing at Trinity, marking the start of an exciting season. Last year’s winter sports season set a high standard, consisting of remarkable achievements and record-breaking performances. With deep NCAA runs by men’s basketball and hockey, outstanding wins by women’s basketball, endless triumphs by mens and womens squash and so much more, the 2024-25 season comes with high expectations. With numerous returning athletes and strengthened programs, this year’s season brings excitement and anticipation.
This past weekend, Nov. 15 to 17, marked the kickoff for winter sports at Trinity, welcoming in the season with a weekend packed with first games. The weekend was a strong start, with teams delivering impressive performances and securing numerous wins. The victories set a strong foundation for the season, with Trinity securing a total of ten wins.
The Trinity men’s basketball team started their season with impressive performances, securing two victories: A 81-59 triumph over Albertus Magnus on Nov. 16 and a 77-62 victory against Husson on Nov. 17. The starting five, forward Drew Lazarre ’26, guard/forward Henry Vetter ’26, forward Tristan Davis ’26, guard/forward Jarrel Okorougo ’26 and guard Will Dorian ’25, displayed exceptional performances in both games, setting the groundwork for two wins. Against Albertus Magnus, the Bantams showcased a well-rounded offensive effort with three players scoring in double figures. Lazarre led the way, posting a career-high 17 points along with four rebounds, two blocks and two steals. With a strong start to their season, the Trinity men’s basketball team has set a tone that hints at continued success in games to come.
The Trinity men’s squash team has been dominant in recent years, and their momentum continues into this season with two big victories. On Nov. 16, the Bantams dominated Tufts with an 8-1 win. The following day, they maintained their winning streak, defeating Middlebury 7-2 in another outstanding performance. In their 8-1 victory over Tufts, the Bantams dominated from the start, with Joachim Chuah Han Wen ’26 leading the charge with a 3-0 win (11-7, 11-4, 11-6). Low Wa-Sern ’28 and Mateo Restrepo ’25 also earned commanding 3-0 victories in the #2 and #3 matches.
This strong start to the season is a promising continuation of the Trinity men’s squash team’s success from last year, where they maintained their reputation as one of the top collegiate programs in the country. The Bantams’ dominant performances against Tufts and Middlebury not only highlight the team’s talent, but they also set the tone for an anticipated successful season.
Looking into further success during the kick-off weekend, the Trinity College women’s ice hockey team completed a season-opening NESCAC series sweep with a 4-2 victory over Connecticut College on Nov. 15 and another 4-2 victory against Connecticut College on Nov. 16. On Nov. 16, the Bantams took control early, with defender Jelani Adorno ’26 scoring a power-play goal in the first period, assisted by forward Marta Mazzocchi ’27. Forward Jenny Guider ’24 sealed the victory for Trinity late in the third period, tipping in a pass from forward Paige Kehoe ’25 to make the score 4-2.
The Bantams 4-2 win over Connecticut College in both games of the series not only secured an early-season sweep but also highlighted their dominance on both sides of the ice. These victories have laid a solid foundation for the season, with the team showing resilience, offensive strength and impressive goaltending, all of which suggest further success as they continue their campaign.
