Women’s Lax Dominates Conn and Springfield

The Trinity College Women’s Lacrosse team had a very successful week after two straight wins in a row against Connecticut College and Springfield. Trinity’s record improves to 9-2 and extends their winning streak to three.

The women started the week strong by breaking Connecticut College’s three game winning streak with a score of 6-12. The game started off on the right foot for the Camels as they scored in just under three minutes in the first half. However, co-captain midfielder Martha Griffin ’16 would score the first of many goal 44 seconds later. An 11 plus minute scoring drought ensued after, with Camel backstop Meg Raskin and Bantam goalie Zoe Ferguson ’18 making two saves each. Griffin would be the one to break the drought with two goals for a hat trick. Both teams traded goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but Trinity would come out on top in halftime with a 4-2 score.

Trinity took control of the game in the second half after Bantam attacker Abby McInerney ’18 scored and assisted on another by attacker Clare Lyne ’17. While the Camels scored again, Kiley Coffey ’18 won a draw to put the score at 7-4. Trinity would spend the next 10 minutes on accomplishing a 5-0 scoring session, With Griffin and Abby Huges ’16 scoring two goals each and Coffey scoring another. Despite a last minute goal by the Camels, it was not enough to overcome the giant Bantam deficit.

While Raskin kept the Camel afloat with 15 saves, the Bantams held a 33-11 shooting edge, won 14 out of 20 draws and forced 12 turnovers. Lyne, Coffey and Huges would both be two score players for the game, while Griffin would be the highlight with five goals, one hat trick, three turnovers and three draw controls.

The game against Springfield was much tighter, ending at 7-8 in double overtime. While Trinity outperformed in possession and shooting, Springfield goalie Gabby Anderson was able to make a career best 14 saves in order to keep the game close. Griffin had another stellar performance with a game-high four goals, draw controls, four ground balls, and a caused turnover. Lyne was able to score twice and add four draw controls, while Ashley Stewart ’16 played a strong defensive game with five caused turnovers, two ground balls and two draw controls. Ferguson had six saves as well in order to keep the game close. While Trinity fell behind 3-1 in the first half, Griffin, along with Emma Malicki ’17 and Lyne, were able to cut the deficit to 4-3 at halftime. A close second half left the game tied at 7-7, leading to two overtime periods that were broken by the goal of Karly Simpson ’17.
