Liturgies at the Bistro Celsius shrine have resumed after students returned to campus for the spring semester. As their first spring semester community engagement event, The Perennial Perk Collective, Trinity’s oldest society, held an information session that featured a caffeine ritual during common hour. The unconventionally late ritual hour is part of a biannual demonstration implemented to attract new followers.
According to Watkinson archives, unofficial variations of Perennial Perk Collective meetings began on campus in the mid-1800s. The first report of such a practice occurred on a frigid winter morning in 1854. In a clearing where the Bistro Celsius monument now stands, three undergraduate students were witnessed puncturing a sealed vessel and holding it to their mouths. With pressure noted as “not of this world”, the mysterious elixir cascaded out of its tin. When attending Episcopalian mass was still the duty of every Trinity man, multiple witnesses chronicled the muscle spasms, eye dilations, and boisterous energies exhibited by the same students during that day’s morning mass.
At the heart of The Perennial Perk Collectives operation stands the Bistros Celsius tower. Erected in 1990 to commemorate the three founding members, the monument remains the central space for all official rituals put on by the organization. Today, the caffeine ritual has taken on a more casual appearance with members opting for sweatpants and hoodies instead of the traditional blue and gold robe. By blending the deeply rooted tradition with contemporary caffeine culture the Perennial Perk Collective E-Board hopes to ensure the preservation of Trinity’s caffeinated spiritual roots. When asked to comment, a Celsius representative stated, “The Trinity caffeine ritual reaches through time. It connects students to the overworked community members of past, present, and future, Celsius is proud to be part of that magic.”
Daily spring semester rituals begin promptly at 8 a.m., all are welcome.
