As the winter season winds down and spring approaches, the Trinity College baseball team has begun another exciting season. After a challenging 2024 campaign, the Bantams are looking to come back stronger in 2025 with fresh talent and strong leadership. The Bantams have been hard at work preparing for a competitive season of non-conference games and NESCAC play. With the loss of several key seniors, the Bantams will have a different lineup in 2025 and must rely on new leaders to step up.

Trinity College’s baseball team concluded the 2024 season with an overall record of 14-22 and a conference record of 5-7 in the NESCAC. The Bantams played well at home, achieving a 7-4 record, while facing challenges on the road with a 6-15 away record and a 1-3 neutral site record.

The Tripod had the opportunity to speak with center fielder Will Sawyer ’26 regarding his reflections on the preseason and his expectations for season kickoff and NESCAC play. With the loss of a strong senior class, the team has had to make adjustments and find new leaders heading into the season. When asked about the new team dynamic and the loss of key seniors, Sawyer stated: “With the loss of a big influential senior class, we are definitely looking for some younger guys to step up this year.  With seventeen first years coming in, we have a lot of room for roles to be filled. In terms of leaders, we have four great seniors that have been in the program for a long time and have done a good job setting the tone for us in the preseason, so we’re just looking to build off of their leadership this year.”

The team dynamic has remained strong despite the large class of first years, which now makes up half of the roster. Regarding the class of first years, Sawyer said: “The dynamic has been good for the most part. The first years take up half of the team, but they are pretty united as a group. They all get along with each other, and we get along with all of them. In terms of guys who have stood out in the preseason, Timmy Domizio ’26 is a first-year from Fairfield, Connecticut, and he has taken over our starting shortstop role. It has been impressive to see his maturity and how he handles himself. It’s been fun to watch. A couple of other guys have stood out too, like Brett Stone ’28 and Aidan Stevenson ’28, who are both going to play significant roles this year. Aidan is our starting DH this season, and he is very mature as a hitter, which is special to see out of a young guy. Brett has done a good job earning himself a starting third baseman role. He swung a great bat during the preseason and has gotten better each day. In terms of pitching, Tyler Fahey ’28 will be our Friday night guy this year. He is very mature for a first-year starting pitcher. Quinn Sorento ’28, Ryder Aubin ’28 and Luis Saldivia ’27 stood out in the preseason as well. We also have a bunch of other first-years that will play significant roles this season.”

The team is optimistic heading into the season and has high expectations for NESCAC play. Sawyer shared his thoughts regarding season expectations: “This has definitely been a productive preseason. We’ve gotten lots of intrasquad scrimmages in, and we also played UMass and Central Connecticut State in preseason scrimmages. It has been good to play against other teams to see how we are sizing up against them. I think that will be super helpful going into the beginning of this season and into NESCAC play because last year obviously it was not the result we wanted or what we are hoping for. We are looking to start up strong this year and to keep building up momentum as we enter NESCAC play. Our scrimmages went well. We beat UMass, and we beat Central Connecticut, which was good to beat some DI teams.”

As the season is beginning, Sawyer explained the team’s strengths and weaknesses as they start the season: “Our biggest strength right now is our offense and our pitching staff. We have a bunch of really talented younger guys in our pitching staff, as well as some veteran returners, which pairs well together. We’ve always been a run-first and aggressive offense, which will pair nicely with our pitching staff. Our biggest area for improvement is our communication skills. I think that will clear up as the season goes on and we get more comfortable playing with each other.”

With a deep roster, strong preseason performances, and a solid mix of veteran leadership and young talent, the team is looking to make a statement this season as they prepare for conference play.

Following the Tripod’s interview with Will Sawyer, Trinity College’s baseball team opened their 2025 season with a doubleheader against the University of Hartford on Saturday, March 1. The Bantams faced a challenging start, dropping both games to the Hawks.

In the first game, Hartford secured a 2-1 victory. The Hawks scored both of their runs in the third inning. Trinity responded in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly from Sawyer, allowing Dylan Schnitzer ’26 to score. Hartford’s pitcher, Anthony Bubba ’27, earned the win, while Trinity’s Andrew Gabriel ’28 took the loss.

The second game led to a 10-5 win over Trinity. The Hawks’ JJ Romatzick ’27 went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ben Schulz ’26 contributed with a two-run homer in the first inning. For Trinity,  Schnitzer hit a three-run home run in the third inning, but it wasn’t enough to counter Hartford’s offense. Ryan Sheehy ’28 secured the win for the Hawks, with Tyler Fahey ‘28 taking the loss for the Bantams.

Despite the tough start to their season, the Trinity College baseball team remains focused and determined as they move forward. The Bantams will look to rebound in their upcoming games, aiming to secure their first victory of the season.
