Fall: the weather cools, the days shorten and you start to think maybe you weren’t ready to come off Prozac. A change of scenery while you get work done is desperately needed. You know the usuals: the Underground, chemistry library, Peter B’s, but what about when you don’t want to see everyone you’ve ever met in your entire life? Here are some options that, as long as BP’s readership this week is as consistently low as it usually is, won’t be overflowing this season:

Albert C. Jacobs Life Sciences Center (LSC)

Scenario: You have a philosophy or literature final on existentialist thought due in 12 hours, and you feel like you’ve been transformed into a horrible vermin.

I know, I know. Other than being featured under ‘fuckyeahbrutalism’ on Tumblr in 2013, the Life Sciences Center doesn’t get a whole lot of attention. Nevertheless, next time it’s freezing out, you have three papers due and you’re carrying an overpriced Peter B’s monstrosity in your hands, head over to the LSC lobby. It’s quiet, dark and intoxicatingly broodish. Give yourself some study breaks and wander the stairwells pretending you’re in a futuristic society where annotated bibliographies and eduroam are distant memories.

Crescent Center for Arts and Neuroscience (CCAN)

Scenario: You woke up early, have no class and your meal swipes just got replenished. The world is your oyster.

The CCAN lobby is a classic morning/mid-afternoon spot to pass the time. The way the sunlight beams through the floor-to-ceiling windows will make you feel like you’re in the part of those mid-2010s coming-of-age movies where they say something like “Maybe it is all gonna be okay,” and wrap themself their knit cardigan. Everyone needs that. Don’t resist it. You’ll leave this space after a couple of hours with no work done, but with a strong urge to clean your room and call your mom.

Roy Nutt Mathematics, Engineering & Computer Science Center (MECC) Lounges

Scenario: Your email inbox is about to explode, and you have three professors “just following up.”

With multiple lounge spaces and the silence of math majors deriving equations for starting conversations, MECC is the perfect backdrop for a productive afternoon. Bring your favorite caffeinated drink to wash down those stimulants; you’re going to be here for a while. Fear not, MECC’s creepy portraits and ghosts of mathematics past will keep you company. Keep in mind, there’s basically never anyone there past 3 p.m., so if you hear someone saying your name, just turn your music up and don’t turn around.
