BITS & PIECES

On Love, Life, and…Actually Forget Those Two We’re Talking About Me

When you get to college everyone tells you “don’t worry, you’ll find your place.” You hear it over and over, you might even start to believe it. It’s not true. Two years ago, I was halfway through college with a mid GPA, two barista-destined majors and a chronically ill betafish who I manufactured weekly medication for in my Hansen dorm room. At that point, my life was almost bad enough to consider joining the student newspaper, so I checked out the Tripod’s site to get a head start.

News? Boring. Opinion? People don’t like mine. Features? Huh? Arts? Already a major. Sports? Kill me now. And would you look at that there’s an ambiguous sixth option: Bits & Pieces.

After sending an email asking if I could try to write for BP I remember thinking I probably wasn’t really funny enough. Yet, within a week I was being asked to write for half the section because no one else wanted to do it. In this probably lies the only lesson BP could possibly teach you: doing the things other people don’t want to do probably won’t get you very far, but hey it’s nice to be wanted. Anyways, back to my original point, if you’re anything like me you probably won’t “find” your place at Trinity (do you also struggle with spatial conceptualization?), but with a few emails you can certainly keep yourself busy in the meantime.

Flash-forward to a couple weeks ago, as I was picking up Tripods for distribution, a Mather employee asked me which article I wrote. I guided her to the end of the paper, and she said “Don’t worry baby, you’ll get to the front one day.” Two years ago I would have corrected her. I would have explained why I wasn’t trying to, that it was an artistic choice, maybe even a moral one. I just said “thanks,” because the back of this paper, where I can make all the photoshopped images I want, does actually feel the most like me. Plus, I’ve been told in other sections that I’m bad for political optics on every side, and the Tripod just cannot afford that right now.

Thank you to Matthew Hyde, Matthew Hyde’s hair, Dan’s compression shirt and The Lugos’ cats (Cookie and Queen) for being there when I ran out of ideas.

It’s been an honor to be intermittently read. Thanks.
