On Tuesday, April 21st, Trinity’s Barnyard announced its plans for Spring Weekend 2023 with Waka Flocka Flame and Sammy Adams headlining the main concert. The weekend will begin on Friday the 28th with the Caribbean Student Association’s fashion show, the staple event for the association. On Saturday afternoon, there will be a Vernon Street Block Party where houses along the street will open their yards for games, live music, and other attractions. The Office of Multicultural Affairs will also be sponsoring a Taste of Culture event during the Block party with food trucks and catering from various local restaurants. That night, Waka Flocka Flame and Sammy Adams and two student groups will perform. EAC (Entertainment Activities Council), also known as Barnyard, organizes a Spring Weekend each year with a headline performer and other activities. Past headline performers in recent years include Swae Lee, Lil Yatchy, and Louis the Child.

This year’s headliner Waka Flocka Flame is an American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia. He had seven songs in the Billboard Top 100 throughout his career, with his 2010 song “No Hands” featuring Roscoe Dash & Wale reaching the Top 15 in 2011. The song won a BET (Black Entertainment Television) Hip Hop Award in 2011. He has been nominated for four other BET awards including Rookie of the Year in 2010. Throughout his career, he has released three studio albums: Flockaveli (2010), Ferrari Boyz (2011) with rapper Gucci Mane, and Triple F Life: Friends, Fans & Family (2012). He currently has over 3.7 million followers on Instagram and often posts inspirational quotes. Although he was seven years too young to legally run for the position, Waka Flocka went viral in 2015 after pretending to run for president of the United States in a campaign with Rolling Stone

Waka Flocka Flame is scheduled to begin his performance at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday with an hour-long performance. He will be preceded by Sammy Adams, a rapper and alumni of the College, who will begin performing at 9:00 p.m. A portion of his music was released when he was an upperclassman at Trinity, where he was also captain of the soccer team, according to a Hartford Courant article published in September of 2010. Adams has one studio album titled The Long Way, which was released in 2016. He has also released a number of singles and EP albums. Homecoming, his EP album released in 2013, reached 45th on the U.S. charts. His most recent single was released in 2022.

The Spring Weekend concert will also feature two student performances, which were selected after an audition process organized by Barnyard. Water for the Pool is a student band, and they will begin their performance at 8:00 p.m., with the second student act DJ Dizzie starting at 8:30 p.m. The concert will be held outside on the Life Sciences Building Quad, and students will be required to present a wristband to gain entry, while non-Trinity guests and faculty and staff must pay a fee to attend. After past years of canceled or limited Spring Weekends due to the pandemic, EAC Barnyard is planning a busy schedule of events to bring the campus community together. With the main concert on Saturday night and other events throughout the two days, this is one of the last times in the semester for friends to get together and attend events before the semester ends and students leave campus for summer break.
