Dear Editor,
I had the privilege on Friday evening, Nov. 14, of seeing Savannah Brooks’ production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Hamlin Hall, and while I had not expected much of the production, it proved to be outstanding.
The director, a senior history major and editor of this publication, brought together a cast over half of whom were either non-actors or who hadn’t acted since they were young and trained them up in barely over a month to do Shakespeare.
And I must say, I am impressed. The cast knew their lines and got comfortable with the audience as the play went on. Even on a shoestring budget, with modest costuming and few props, the quality of the work showed through.
We enjoyed the play so much that we opted to see it again on Sunday. The pacing was even better, the lines were clearer, and the cast had clearly grown into their roles. I think it may the best student production I’ve seen in the six years I’ve been in the Trinity community.
The show demonstrates that student theater at Trinity doesn’t require a massive budget, nor even professional direction or the support of the theater department, and I look forward to seeing more independent productions from equally daring students in the future.
