Trinity Women’s Hockey captures win over Williams

On Feb. 28, Trinity Women’s Hockey faced off against Williams in their first postseason game, emerging victorious after an overtime goal by Trinity captain Shannon Farrell ’16.
Williams hit the ground running with an early goal just 1:54 into the game as senior Natalie Bernstein capitalized on a strange bounce and managed to sneak the puck past Trinity goaltender, Sydney Belinskas ’18. Williams held onto that lead for the rest of the first period.
As the second period began, Williams sophomore Alex Lovaas’s checking penalty carried over from the first period, giving Trinity the edge. Bantam Emma Tani ’16 exploited Williams’ man-down disadvantage and scored her 9th goal of the season within the first minute of the second period, assisted by Cheeky Herr ’16. Much like the first period, after an early bout of action, the score remained stagnant for the duration, both teams playing evenly.
The third period saw stellar performances by Williams’ and Trinity’s goalies as both made strong saves, keeping the score at a nail-biting 1-1 and forcing the game to continue into overtime.
After eight minutes of overtime play, Farrell scored after receiving a pass from Hannah Oganeku ’18, giving Farrell her 13th goal of the season and Trinity with the win. Trinity goaltender Belinskas had an outstanding game, letting in just one goal as Williams outshot Trinity 35-24. Another deciding factor was both teams’ capacity to utilize power plays. Trinity managed to harness their power play advantage and score during one of Williams’ two penalties while Williams was unable to benefit from Trinity’s four penalties.
Trinity will move on to the NESCAC semifinals with an away game against Middlebury College at 1 p.m. on March 5.
