Future Groover and Mover ‘29

The 2024 Paris Olympics saw great success, especially in the world of competitive breakdancing. In response to this, Trinity College Athletics announced in a statement that they would begin recruiting for a collegiate-level Division III breakdancing team. “We’re really, really excited,” a Trinity College Athletics spokesperson shared, “because there’s nothing super special about Trinity athletics right now, we need something, like breakdancing, that puts the liberal in liberal arts, to put us on the map.”
Some Trinity students were excited to learn about this new development, with Ben Dover ’28 sharing, “I like to watch breakdancing. It is very fun. I will go to all of the breakdancing performances because it is very fun.” Dover admitted that he had never seen a live breakdancing competition, but he was excited to because he “doesn’t get out much and would love to see a real life woman dance”
Others were disappointed with this news and took to Instagram to share their opinions. In a now deleted post, user @squashsucker69 posted: “I don’t get why Trinity thinks they need to make a new athletic team to make people notice us. The whole entire world already knows that we are the best at squash, because the whole entire world knows what the sport of squash entails and are avid watchers of the collegiate teams. The men’s national squash championship already put Trinity sports on the map, so why do these idiots care about breakdancing?” Some Instagram users disagreed with this sentiment; user @urmomisfat420 replied “bruh wtf is squash isn’t that a vegetable,” and user @deeeeeeznuttttttzzzzz commented “breakdancing and squash are stupid sports, can y’all pls take a break.” Trinity Athletics responded to @deeeeeeznuttttttzzzzz’s criticism with an Instagram Reel of Banty walking sadly along the Long Walk.
The Tripod was able to speak with an incoming member of the new breakdancing team, Moe Lester ’30. He shared that everyone at his high school was very surprised when he announced his commitment, his parents included. “I legit told nobody that I had been recruited because the whole process was really sketch but, like, also super fast. I posted a video on Instagram of me dancing after being inspired by those kids from China who post their practices on Instagram while crying, and then I got a DM from Trinity being, like, ‘yo, do you want to come breakdance in Hartford?’” Lester admitted that he thought it was a scam at first, but then decided to “yolo it” and go along with it.
Soon after the announcement, the campus bookstore ordered Mens and Womens breakdancing merchandise including a themed windbreaker for ironic effect. Although the breakdancing season has not yet started, Trinity students and alumni seem to be excited about the future of sports at Trinity. Ultimately, the sport combines improvisation with ridiculous body movements, so what’s not to love?
