Men’s basketball handles Vassar for fourth straight win

The basketball team is off to a strong start this season after winning the Harbor Invitational last weekend, and downing Vassar College this past Wednesday.  After a close first quarter, the Bantams pulled away towards the end of the half after a three pointer from Trinity’s Eric Gendron ’18 started a 13-0 run, propelling them to a commanding 42-25 lead at halftime.  Gendron had a perfect day shooting, knocking down all five shots, three of which were from beyond the arc, as well as collecting four rebounds.

The second half was much tighter, as Trinity only outscored Vassar by one point.  However, Trinity’s strong shooting, and taking advantage of turnovers kept the Bantams at a fairly comfortable lead throughout the game.  Ed Ogundeko ’17 had another big game with 14 points and 11 rebounds, his fourth double double of the season.  Ogundeko had two big buckets early in the third to jumpstart a 10-0 run for the Bantams that put them at a comfortable lead that never really dwindled significantly for the rest of the game.

In the first five games of the season, the story for Trinity has really been their play off the bench.  Against Vassar the bench put up 28 points compared to Vassar’s 3, and this season Trinity’s bench has outscored opponents 141-50.  Points off the bench are hugely important, and oftentimes go unnoticed, but strong depth gives players more experience, and allows starters to get rest so they’re playing at max efficiency when they’re out on the floor.

The Bantams have an away game on Tuesday at Eastern Connecticut State, and another on Friday Dec. 11 against Susquehanna at King’s College.  The team will look to ride on the success from the past few games and continue their four-game winning streak.
